My work:
As a social anthropolgist I have been
doing resarch on ethnicity and the construction of new ethnic
identities among migrants, and finished the work at the university 10
years ago with a phd on this subject and with a compartive study in
europe on how cities manage the integration of immigrants. I have then
been working as an expert on migration/integration in a NGO for 7
years. For 16 months now I am at the gender desk of SDC headquarter.
My checkreality/case:
The main subjects I am working on are gender and natural resource
management (mainly water), gender and income/employment strategies,
gender in multilateral politics and the more conceptual and theortical
debates on gender mainstreaming in development politics. Gender is a
cross cutting issue, it is a approach or a method to be implemented in
the different fields of intervention, Rural Skill Develomment is one of
it, and I think that here gender is very crucial also in the context of
peoples mobility growing due to better skills and knowledge. Neither
migration is gender neutral nor the impacts on the staying population.
Skill development projects have to be based on a gender aware analysis
of the different situations, strategies and resources of groups, with a
careful differentiation along social, economic, gender lines.
My participation:
I will participate in this cycle being
aware that the gender comments could have been anywhere from the
beginning. I think one of the crucial aspects will in this cycle be
that we really look at the gender relationships, if women do gain
access to power (not just local power) by the development of their
skills or if the skills have the oposite impact by reproducing existing
power hierarchies.
